Dis-place aims to create authentic cross-sector collaborations that raise the profile of the area and its resources as a catalyst for fertilising community pollination.

Through action research we will strategically plan and test a sustainable cultural offer; developed from understanding and challenging the needs and motivations of our resident and transient communities. This extends beyond the geographical boundaries of place, the emotional and historical milestones and interdependent scales of economy.

We seek to make:

  • communities,

  • collaborations

  • and connections

Crucial civic functions of placemaking are missing from the JQ community. The JQ is a dichotomy of heritage trades and contemporary creative industries, residents and transient communities of learning. The intersections between students, residents and workforce are fluid; operating in silos due to a lack of visibility and communication. Without an inclusive hub for community, we need to displace these ideals and access points in more creative, engaging ways that celebrate the skills, heritage and opportunities of the area.

Building upon guerrilla craftivism that creates opportunities for urban interventions we will create satellite nodes of culture, promotion, and community as anchor points of place and people. Formatively testing how these points of engagement can be monetised for the first time to create a self-sustaining eco-system. We want to cultivate civic consciousness mini culture and heritage institutions, which will become de-facto community centres.

Dis-place has been funded by GBSLEP with additional match funding from Civic Square Dream Fund.

This research period has led us away from our initial model of engagement as the landscape changed throughout a year of pandemic restrictions and economy changes.

Keep watching for more updates as to how this sustainable model has evolved.
